The Pre-Christmas time around Bolzano

The period leading up to a Christmas is ideal for a trip to the city centre of Bolzano. The scents of fresh pastries such as apple strudel, Funnel cake, or Christmas biscuits will wash over you as you sip delicious apple punch and various kinds of mulled wine. Take a leisurely stroll around the many market stalls and through the brightly-lit little streets in the old town and gaze in awe at the many South Tyrolean sights, while listening to Christmas carols in the background.

Then, why not benefit from the special first-hand experience of seeing how the talented craftsmen create their well-known Val Gardena wood carvings? It’s well worth popping over to see the traditional biblical crib close to this open-air workshop. This is great for a nice holiday photo next to the tall colourfully-decorated Christmas tree. Also, muse at the many Christmas concerts that take place in or close to Bolzano’s Christmas market.

There’s certainly no shortage of South Tyrolean traditions and customs during the Advent season. For example, on the 5th and 6th of December, St. Nicholas visits the city’s Christmas market to spread seasonal good tidings and hand out little gifts. However, watch out for his devilish companion, Krampus. This vividly-dressed character, locally known as "Toifl", wears scary masks and loves to play devilish tricks, swinging his chain with fiery red eyes.

As a romantic alternative to the Krampuslauf when the devil runs through the streets with his masks, you can take a carriage ride through the old town of Bolzano or even through the enchanting snowy landscape of the Renon. Take the Rittner Bahndl, a little train that goes from one Christmas market on the mountain to the next. Anyone looking to buy a nice little Christmas gift from South Tyrol for their loved one will find that the pretty Christmas tree baubles made by the internationally-acclaimed South Tyrolean artist, Marcello Jori, are ideal. They’re perfect as a souvenir of your Christmas in Italy.
